Before George Romero, there was White Zombie

George Romero created the modern zombie in 1968. Zombie movies did not begin with him, however. Two major films before the modern zombie era were White Zombie and its sequel, Revenge of the Zombies.

White Zombie made its debut in 1932, and told a story of a man who steals the woman he loves from her fiance by turning her into a mindless zombie. However, the man who helped him turn her refuses to turn her back when asked, and only adds the poor guy to the zombie slaves on his plantation.

The sequel to White Zombie, Revenge of the Zombies, was released in 1943. This film depicts the same mindless slave zombies as White Zombie, but this time gives the power to create zombies to nazis.
